How to Convert a PDF to Markdown

Markdown is what people actually want when they say "get the text out". It keeps headings, lists and links, drops the styling nobody needs, and pastes cleanly into a notes app, a repository or a chat window.

Why Markdown rather than Word

A .docx carries a page layout: margins, fonts, styles. If you are moving text into Notion, Obsidian, GitHub or an AI chat, that layout is noise. Markdown keeps the structure and drops the appearance.

It also produces a file you can read as plain text, diff, and version. A docx is a zip of XML; Markdown is text.

Convert

  • Open PDF to Markdown and add your file.
  • Choose whether to keep page breaks as horizontal rules. Useful for long documents, noise for short ones.
  • Convert and open the .md file in a text editor.
  • Read the first page. If headings are plain paragraphs, the source PDF did not mark them as headings — you will need to add the hashes by hand.

What survives

  • Headings: survive when the PDF marked them with a tagged structure. Many PDFs do not.
  • Paragraphs: survive as text, usually with correct line joining.
  • Lists: survive when the original used real bullets. Typed dashes come through as text.
  • Links: survive as URLs, sometimes as Markdown links.
  • Tables: usually become plain text and need rebuilding.
  • Images: dropped. Extract them separately if you need them.
  • Bold and italic: partially preserved, and often lost on text that was bold by font rather than by marking.

Common complaints

  • Every line is its own paragraph: the PDF had hard line breaks. Join them with a script or a find-and-replace.
  • No headings at all: the PDF was not tagged. Add the hashes manually — ten minutes on a normal article.
  • A scanned PDF produced nothing: there is no text. Run OCR first.
  • Tables are unusable: rebuild them. Markdown tables are quick to type and the result is readable.
  • Ligatures appear as odd characters: fi, fl and similar may arrive as single glyphs. Find and replace them.

Where this is genuinely useful

Feeding a contract or a research paper into an AI assistant works far better with Markdown than with a pasted PDF, because the structure tells the model what is a heading and what is body text.

Turning a published report into documentation sections is fast when the headings survive.

Keeping notes on a paper you read: convert, delete what you do not need, keep the rest searchable forever.

Privacy

Converting a PDF to Markdown is usually a prelude to pasting that text somewhere else — a chat window, a note app, a repository. The text leaves your control either way.

A browser-based converter does the extraction on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so at least the conversion step adds no new copy of the document.
